EDITORIAL: Training in region needs to be first and foremost

April 25, 2025

Our labour force has been one of the only things left behind by the colonizers of these islands in the Caribbean. They didn’t leave any money and the land was undeveloped. If they could have taken the industry they would have too, but most of the industry was tied to the land they monopolized.

Our labour, our hands and feet, have been the only thing that has been constant for Caribbean people’s. When we were stolen and brought to these lands, we didn’t come with suitcases full of money or gold. Some of us didn’t even come with clothes. We were just brought as we were and forced to work in the slave master’s vineyard for his benefit.

So, considering this glaring fact, we have to continue to develop the skillset of our people. It is the only pathway to growth that was given to us. We need to ensure that any foreign developer that comes in to develop any one of these countries has as a part of their development mandate to commit to skills training at all levels. Soft skills and hard skills.

We cannot forget this.
