US President Donald Trump just announced today that he is raising tariffs up to 104 percent on all Chinese goods. He intends on putting as much hurt on China and revaluing their goods so they are competitive in the American market with American made products.
This is tough medicine, but America needs to do this. Too long now China has been dumping goods in the American market and no one has decided to do anything about it. Trump believes China has been taking advantage of their position and subsidizing their companies while American companies go out of business. Part of this is true. We tend to forget that China is a communist country and they believe in state assistance for business.
What has made it worse was that previous American presidents trusted China to not dump their goods and to transform into a more democratic form of government, which they have not done.
Trump is saying enough of this now. Sure, Americans and the rest of the Western world will feel the sting of these trade policies, but to not stand with America on this is to stand for communism and dubious ally in China.
