EDITORIAL: US dockworker strike part of the ultimate October surprise

October 1, 2024

US presidential elections always tend to bring out the troubles, doesn’t it? For those who study politics, would be well to know about the October surprise. It happens every US presidential cycle and in earnest since 1980.

In the 1980 presidential election, Republican challenger Ronald Reagan feared that a last-minute deal to release American hostages held in Iran might earn incumbent Jimmy Carter enough votes to win re-election. As it happened, in the days prior to the election, press coverage was consumed with the Iranian government’s decision—and Carter’s simultaneous announcement—that the hostages would not be released until after the election.

Speaking of Iran, we have them now lobbing missiles into Israel.  The second part of the October surprise. Since October 1, Iran has been sending hundreds of missiles into Israel in response to Israel’s incursion into Lebanon to assassinate Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah. They’re having fun now.

All of this is due to US president Joe Biden being asleep at the wheel and his vice president, and Democratic presidential nominee for the upcoming November election, Kamala Harris, being too pre-occupied with campaigning against former president Donald Trump that she is forgetting she has a country to run.

Hillary Clinton, just today, warned the Harris campaign that they should be prepared for the October surprise. Miss Clinton, it has already happened. Look around you.

I can’t wait until the US presidential elections are over. We need a break!
