EDITORIAL: US guns are a scourge to the Caribbean

November 19, 2024

It should not have come to a shock that the majority of the guns that are killing our people in the Caribbean come from the US. The gun culture in the US apparently knows no border.

They believe in their 2nd amendment and the right to bear arms, but not everyone has that mantra. And because they don’t does not mean that they are any less of a nation state or foolish for not wanting guns to put a check on authoritarianism.

Now, as for this magazine, we believe that firearms should be made legal for people that pass certain checks and scrutiny, but the illegal guns imported from the US currently go towards criminal gangs and securing the narcotic trade.

This is really the issue of the guns being used in all of these homicides in the Caribbean and not the guns themselves.

We should not so willingly shift the blame from our failings as a region to properly socialize our young people on the one side and on the other, make the drug trafficking trade a thing of our past. But we won’t live up to that now, would we?

We need to put a check on these illegal guns coming into the Caribbean and until we can think about why they are being imported in the first place and then dealing with it from that level, we will always have this out of control gun problem.

The US has to do their part and we have to do our part.
