EDITORIAL: We grieve for Guyana now!

May 23, 2023

The fire that engulfed the Mahdia Secondary School on Monday morning is shocking as it is heartbreaking that it killed 19 young people that lived at the school.

Reports coming out are saying the police have a suspect in custody, a student who was said to have been upset that her cellular phone was taken away from her and she reacted against the school and the people in it in a very tragic way.

What a horrible thing to do in retaliation. Often times, as in this case, we don’t think while we are in our blind, selfish rage and we tend to hurt ourselves and others.

What cannot be brought into any perspective is how the loss is impacting those parents who lost their children. Our sympathies are with these families and survivors at this time.

In the story ran in this Magazine today, we report that this matter is getting the attention of people in the highest position in government in addition to regional leaders who are expressing their condolences for the families that have lost their loved ones.

These events should bring people together, regardless of what part of the Caribbean you are in. We sincerely hope that the proper precautions are taken to ensure fire safety is taken more seriously if it was not before.

Apparently, the children were trapped in the structure because of the steel bars in place that kept criminals out. What a time we live in.

Once again, our prayers and thoughts are with Guyana now as they process this tragedy.
