The Caribbean will never live down drug trafficking as long as North Americans and Europeans crave illicit narcotics. America has a substance abuse problem and it is well known. While they remain wealthy and the Caribbean people remain poor, then we will always have a brave soul willing to take the risk to move a few kilos of cocaine into the US.
Truth be told, every Caribbean country that has a kingpin, who has a plug in South America, who also has a connection in the US or Europe to where the shipment of drugs head to. They can be as humble as a fisherman or as flashy as John Gotti, but they are more often than not humble and out of the public eye.
Some would argue that drug money is what kept many of our island nations afloat during the economic turmoil of the late 70s to the mid-80s, and there is a lot of evidence for that too. Some would want that drug money to start to spend again in their countries so they can start to see the private spending to supplement the government’s spending.
We say we understand why there may be a little bit of drug dealing, but in no way do we condone it at all. There is no excuse for destroying someone’s life with cocaine or methamphetamines for a quick dollar. There is a cost. Those of us who live in the inner cities see the human cost of drug users and feel the cost of living in drug infested environments.
