This is the hot-button question being talked about at the Caribbean Investment Forum- What exactly does the Caribbean have to offer investors? Of course, we have sun, sand and sea. But there has to be more than that.
Investing in the Caribbean can become monotonous, because the option are limited to resorts and hotels. However, we have never developed agriculture to the point where we jump directly to processing. Fruits like guava and pineapples should never be imported into the Caribbean. Neither should mangoes and coconut water, but yet we do.
Processing plant development should be a strategy moving forward, because it will feed itself due to the various products there can be to process, from all of the aforementioned products and then some.
There is also opportunities in the technology sector. The information superhighway is for everyone. With our proximity to the USA, connectivity should never be a challenge. We should harness that and be a facilitator of the information superhighway for the world. Data centres and exchanges should be paramount. This would lend to the budding Fin-Tech revolution and buttress the financial services competitive advantage we have.
While we await for the brighter minds among us to deliver up innovative solutions, we should not be afraid to add our two cents to the debate.
