We have a feeling the Trump administration will have a zero tolerance policy towards the Maduro regime in Venezuela, but we do not expect direct or indirect intervention.
What we may see is the continuation of the isolationist policies of sanctions and embargo’s, in hopes that it will force regime change in Venezuela.
What has not happened yet is the leadership of Venezuela’s opposition meet with the Trump team officially. This will be an important gauge on how Trump views the strategic nature of Venezuela, whether he can stomach Maduro or by all means Maduro has to leave office.
Trump has not signaled a willingness to meet with anyone from Venezuela, Maduro or the opposition leaders, so we will just have to wait and see.
In the meantime, a broken Venezuela is as much of a threat for the Western Hemisphere’s security as if Haiti right now. They both need attention. The difference with Venezuela is that the actors have the potential to turn into radically hostile enemies.
Will Trump come up with a solution? We hope so.
