EDITORIAL: Why are international agencies giving money to Haiti?

May 19, 2023

We have noticed something we find a bit sinister happening with the World Bank in particular, they have continually been giving Haiti millions of dollars despite Haiti being in turmoil and having no elected government at this time. We find this strange and a bit onerous, to say the very least.

The first point is, who exactly is the World Bank giving the money to? It’s not as if the country has a properly functioning government or someone to receive the money on behalf of the people officially? Is the World Bank in the habit of throwing money up in the air and where it lands is where it lands? If this is the case, I need a $10m loan for a bridge in Port of Spain that needs repair- Give it to me to organise on behalf of the people of Trinidad.

The second point is, if this is just a public relations exercise, it is a very poor one and kind of cruel. If, by any chance, these are a series of paper agreements and money is not being allocated to Haiti- which money at this time should not be allocated to Haiti- why make a public show about it if no development would happen for the country in the short or medium term?

We believe Haiti needs help, of course it does. But the World Bank’s efforts- or any effort by an international lending agency- should not be wasted down a hole of emptiness. There are many other deserving countries that can use the aid and development money other than Haiti at this time. To waste the resources are gross and just plain wrong.
