The recent deaths of a 12 year old who was found strangled to death in the bushes with just her top on last week along with the murder of a 72 year old woman over the weekend has sparked calls for the resumption of capital punishment in The Bahamas.

As family members gather to console each victim’s closest loved ones, activists and politicians alike have called for clarity on capital punishment as a deterrent to crime.

Families of All Murder Victims (FOAM) founder Khandi Gibson is urging the government to establish clear criteria for when crimes warrant the death penalty.

Also, the Coalition of Independents leader Lincoln Bain  also said on a television broadcast that a COI administration will execute murders.

He also explains how he and his team will get it done by passing laws that will prevent the Privy Council from stopping it.

Bain, a former police officer, said “If you commit murder, you will be put to death.”

Adriel Moxey, the 12 year old, was reportedly strangled to death. A missing person alert was sent out for Adriel last week Wednesday, mere hours before her body was found. A man is in custody for Adriel’s murder.

Meanwhile, police also have in custody a 25 year old in connection with the weekend murder of 72 year old Vernecha Butler. It is alleged the man in custody was found by two male relatives of Butler who had detained him until authorities arrived.

Sherwin Johnson and his uncle, family members of Butler, told authorities at the scene that they were just in the process of beating the 25 year old suspect before the police arrived on the scene.

The suspect, who is known to police, was taken by ambulance from the scene and is currently being detained. He was released Tuesday afternoon.

This takes the murder count in The Bahamas to 104.
