A Suriname activist has been arrested on suspected drug charges less than one month after he staged a protest against the sitting government.

Reported by the Sun in Suriname, activist Siebrano Pique was detained on Sunday after his arraignment by the Narcotics Brigade of the Suriname Police Force (KPS). He was arrested Sunday afternoon for violation of the Narcotics Act.

If you remember, Pique was involved in a protest on the Chan Santokhi government, where protestors were screaming “Down with Chan” as well as other anti-government epithets.

However, in 2014 Pique was involved in a drug case. He had posted a box in which drugs (liquid cocaine) were hidden. On the day of the protest, Wednesday January 20, Pique had indicated that he had made a mistake in the past and that he could possibly be arrested. He had indicated that members of the RBT would pick him up.

The police tracked down the activist on Sunday at his home address in Para and arrested him. Saturday morning Pique posted a message on his Facebook page with the text: “Be honest, do we still have the RIGHT to a free opinion? I ask for the rest of the SURINAMERS.

The police are looking for me at various addresses, the correct one is Johanes Piquestraat 32, Onverwacht, Bose Kondre. If I had really done something against the law, I would be a fool to protest. Anyway, seek and you will find, “Pique wrote.

After consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, Pique has been detained.
