Journalist Rebecca Theodore gives clarification in interview with the international press on misleading video circulating on social media that the International Court of Justice declared Israel an illegal state.
On her arrival at Miami International airport, September 4, 2024, Theodore clarified that a video circulating on social media platforms, claiming that the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has declared Israel an illegal state and decided that it should no longer be recognized as a sovereign nation is false.
The ICJ’ did not declare Israel an illegal state or call for it to be unrecognized as a sovereign nation. Instead, Theodore said that .the court’s opinion focused on Israel’s presence in the Palestinian-occupied territories.
The .ICJ ruling was an opinion focused on specific actions taken by Israel in the occupied territories and not a blanket declaration on Israel’s sovereignty or its status as a nation.
Theodore went on to say that the general public should know that the ICJ’s opinion was requested by the United Nations General Assembly following a Palestinian request, and came in the context of mounting violence in the region. The decision overlapped with Israel’s military operations in Gaza, which had been prompted by Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel in October 2023.
Theodore has called for the video to be taken off social media as it has the potential to delude and intensify further tensions against Israel.
The International Court of Justice did not declare Israel an illegal state, or call for its international derecognition. The video is misleading and does not truthfully reflect the court’s decision.
As director of the Caribbean Israel Summit, Theodore continues to uphold the notion that Israel is a humanitarian state, and that Israel has a long-standing tradition of extending aid to alleviate hunger, poverty, and disease as well in the wake of natural disasters and terrorist attacks beyond its borders.
Theodore is also among the list of professional journalists and global speakers promoting investments in the fields of cyber security, water sanitation, housing, education, solar farming, and agriculture for sustainable growth and development in the Caribbean, using modern methods of Israel expertise and technology.
