Acting Trinidad and Tobago Commissioner of Police, Erla Harewood-Christopher, was arrested last weekend during an investigation into the Strategic Services Agency (SSA), more specifically in the acquisition of two sniper rifles.

Christopher was released after spending two days in custody and after being interrogated by a team of investigators, led by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin.

Christopher was released, pending further enquiries, after investigators were advised to do such by Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard S.C.

She remained silent as her attorney, Senior Counsel Pamela Elder, briefly addressed the media.

Harewood-Christopher was detained at her office at the Police Administration Building, Sackville Street, Port of Spain, on January 30.

The development came hours after the former director of the SSA, Major Roger Best, was arrested at his Arima home in connection with the purchase of the weapons.

After her arrest, she made a statement saying that the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) continues to work assiduously to investigate the recent murders, pursuing several strong leads.

The acting top cop says the prevalence of illegal guns in communities is a central focus of the service and she is directing strategies, targeting the influx of firearms.

Acting Commissioner Christopher says the TTPS is not daunted by the unfortunate and disturbing spate of violence over this weekend.

In fact, she says, the service will continue to intensify efforts to crack down on gangs to break the hold of the gang culture and criminality that leaves a trail of death and despair within communities.
